Steps

Goal: Re-bond peeling vinyl or replace damaged LVT without trapping moisture under the floor.

  • Identify sheet vs tile vs floating plank before you buy supplies.
  • Good: Localized peel on a dry floor—continue.
  • Bad: Soft subfloor, mold smell, or pre-1980s sheet—see When to get help.

Assess the damage

Goal: Know whether glue, replacement, or full floor work is appropriate.

  • Press the peel—if it sponges, investigate moisture before adhesive.
  • Good: Sound underlayment and a small lifted edge.
  • Bad: Widespread failure or crumbling backing—pro assessment.

When to get help

Call a flooring contractor if:

  • The subfloor moves or squeaks across a wide area.
  • You may have asbestos-containing sheet vinyl—do not sand or pulverize.
  • LVT failure follows repeated plumbing leaks.

For related fixes, see Fix a door that sticks or Fix a door that will not latch.

Verification

  • Peeled areas stay flat after 24 hours of normal walking.
  • No new curls at the same seam after a week.
  • Transitions and base trim hide exposed edges without pinching the vinyl.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Identify type Sheet vs LVT vs peel-and-stick.
  2. Stop moisture Fix leak; dry subfloor.
  3. Reglue or replace Adhesive and roller, or swap plank.
  4. Seal seams Seam sealer after cure.

Frequently asked questions

Why does vinyl peel up at the edge?
Weak adhesive, water from spills or slab moisture, or heavy rolling loads that break the bond. Peel-and-stick also fails if the underfloor was dusty or not primed.
Can I iron vinyl flat?
Some installers use gentle heat on sheet vinyl to relax it before regluing—use a cloth barrier and low heat only; LVT can warp with heat.
When should I replace instead of patch?
When the wear layer is torn, asbestos-era sheet is involved, or more than a small area is failed—full replacement may be safer and faster.
